I learned these in 8th grade in Rancho Cordova. I had to say what the
theme of Robinson Crusoe was, and I couldn't figure out what a theme
was. I thought it might be a moral as in Aesop's fables. So I said the
theme was that when hard work is applied you can succeed, or some BS
like that. I had to live a lot longer and be exposed to the word before
I realized the theme was more like Man Against Nature. That was too
advanced a concept for the 8th grade, in my opinion. But Mr Jodice was a
good teacher, and even broughjt in a couple af successful myster
writers, a husband and wife. Tthe wife said the publisher only bought
her first book because he didn't know who did it. Well, she didn't know
either and that's when she started outlining.
